Nowhere Newsletter 03 talks to Clint Woodside, head of Deadbeat Club about publishing and what to look forward to.
What is the story behind Deadbeat Club ?
I started Deadbeat Club in 2011 when I moved to LA... before that I was making zines and things, and needed a way to get them out in the world... I got the URL and didn't think much about it. A year or 2 later, Printed Matter decided to have the first LA Art Book Fair... and living on the east coast for most of my life, I knew that was gonna be a great event. So I got a table, but I only had 3 or 4 zines out at the time. So I ramped up production and wound up having 10 or so zines... and the next think I knew I had a publishing company. It was all very organic, working with friends and just making things I love.
It still is really. It’d been about 9 years now and we have expanded our production to books and special editions, upping the quality while keeping the same DIY spirit that we started with, stemming from the hardcore punk scene that was formative to my upbringing. Over the last year we have added coffee roasting to the production menu, working with farms that have a strong positive social impact in their communities.
Which upcoming photographers / titles would you like to mention ?
Right now we have 5 books slated for release.
Ward Long - "Summer Sublet" which was just released.
Kovi Konoweicki - "and in its place, another" we hope to launch for presale starting in mid/late november (we will see how quick production goes).
Virginia Wilcox -"Arboreal" also hope to launch at the same time as Kovi's book.
Then in winter or early spring of 2021:
Jake Reinhart - "Laurel, Mountain Laurel".
Vanessa Winship - "Ohio" (i think thats the final title... it could change. not sure).
What advice would you give aspiring book publishers / self publishers ?
Work with people you know, love and trust. And ask all the questions... you won't always get all the answers... but you will get all the ones you need.
Don't worry how others do things... your way is your way.... and that's the best way.
