Continuing my series of interviews with photographers, I am thrilled to present photographer Gui Marcondes.

Happy reading!

What is your backstory?

I am originally from Brazil. I spent most of my childhood in a city called Salvador in the North of the country. I came back to my hometown of São Paulo, in the South, as a teenager and lived there until my twenties, when I moved first to LA, then to NY. After fifteen years in Brooklyn, I recently came back to São Paulo. I have done a few different things throughout my life. I went to architecture school, then worked as a designer and illustrator, and then I went into animation, which I still do to this day, commercially. I have done a few experimental animation shorts that got good runs in the festival circuit, but nowadays photography is the main venue for my artistic work. I mostly don't do work for hire in photography. I am not against it, but because I don't actively look for it, I rarely get invited to do so. Doing commercial work in other areas allows me to develop my photography at my own pace. I tend to describe myself as a "visual artist". That designation is a bit vague, but at least it is open to the other media I pursue, like drawing, video, installations, etc.
