The island's rich history traces back to the Palaeozoic era, molded by melting glaciation, the formation of the Great Lakes, and the enduring influences of wildlife and previous civilizations, resulting in a present-day landscape that is tangible, aesthetic, and a ubiquitous envelope for surveillance.

The images captured were fashioned from elements of the explored terrain, unveiling a visual representation of the island's resilience, seclusion, and survival.

Turner’s work has a tactile, almost ethereal quality, which stems from his fastidious and experimental approach to the process of image making. These are images that are deeply ponderous in nature & often require repeated viewings which reveal the subtle details that unlock the work.

I wanted to see if the portraits would reflect the uncertainties of the modern age. I shot about 100 portraits. In early 2023 I completed the series and published it as a book with Kerber Verlag in september.” — Pascal Haas

Character Arc, the documentary photo series by Pascal Haas (b. 1976), features a collection of portraits of Berlin-based actors. The photos, taken between 2021 and 2023, depict the actors personally, in the park or on the street—outside of their roles, away from the stage and the set. The serene black-and-white analogue portraits show the artists as approachable, free from any artifice. In this way, the images reveal both their strength and their vulnerability, reflecting the uncertainties of the modern age. The rhythm of the series is based on the seasons, as can be discerned from the light, the clothes they are wearing, and the natural surroundings.

Equally warm and weird, the photos stray away from just romance, moving to a more nuanced and holistic view. Generous, present and vulnerable – the photographs in this book are about standing next to, not in front of, the people one photographs: something each artist does exceptionally well.

Photographs are left unauthored, deliberately blurring the lines between two artists. A joint effort, the book is really about the similarities in approach of the photographers, and allowing the photographs to lead, not the artist.

The person who took these images was younger, more romantic, and more impressionable than the person writing now. The beginning of the series takes place in Memphis–my hometown of nineteen years–at the start of the pandemic. I was in the process of recovering from my darkest depression. 

Somehow, looking inward seemed like a way forward, documenting the small beauty within a life I seldom found reassuring.

Relocating to Ocracoke–a small island belonging to the outer banks of North Carolina–that following August was unplanned. I fell in love, not only with a boy but with the community, the land, and the wayward living of island life. It was an escape from the enclosure of Memphis, yet through documenting this new chapter, I found myself in conversation with the other self, the one who’d been struggling against constraints of my own making.

Desire Lines can be read in multiple ways–as a narrative, prophecy, reckoning, poem, or allegory. Either way, it signifies those most precious moments of reflection."

Dana Lixenberg: Polaroid 54/59/79 (Roma Publications)

The title of this book with 768 Polaroids refers to the types of peel-apart instant film that Dana Lixenberg used between 1993 and 2010, which could be loaded into a cassette that fit into her 4×5″ field camera. These instant Polaroid prints, serving as test and reference material for lighting and composition, provide an intimate glimpse into Lixenberg’s work process during photo shoots for numerous clients such as Vibe, The New York Times Magazine, The New Yorker, Rolling Stone, Vrij Nederland, and personal projects. After the Polaroid Corporation went out of business in 2008, Lixenberg finished her last box of Polaroid 54 two years later. Apart from being an ode to this specific material, the large collection of portraits also reflects the American culture and society Lixenberg encountered in the 1990s and 2000s.

Jason Lee: TX | CA 17 (Stanley/Barker)

The pictures in Jason Lee’s forthcoming monograph were made in the summer of 2017 on a drive from his then adopted home state of Texas to Los Angeles, where he’d lived prior and from where he set out to start photographing from the road in 2006.

TX | CA 17 is the first time Lee has published images from a single outing. They are presented in geographical and (rough) chronological order—North Texas, NM, AZ, the California desert, and finally DTLA, where we see the gentleman awaiting his bus. The exposures were made primarily along and surrounding Highways 287, 40/66, 62, and 10.

It’s always a pleasure revisiting the familiar—these somehow comforting landmarks; these reminders—and equally exciting to discover new sights, make new pictures, and collect new memories. Lee Friedlander: Framed by Joel Cohen (Fraenkel Gallery)

In his selection of 70 photographs by Lee Friedlander, acclaimed filmmaker Joel Coen focuses on Friedlander’s beautifully strange sense of composition. In Friedlander’s unmistakable style, images are off kilter and visually dense, bisected and carved by stop signs and utility poles, store windows and reflections, car doors and windshields or shadows and trees. “As a filmmaker, I liked the idea of creating a sequence that would highlight Lee’s unusual approach to framing—his splitting, splintering, repeating, fracturing, and reassembling elements into new and impossible compositions,” Coen writes.

Featuring work spanning more than 60 years, the book includes selections from some of Friedlander’s most celebrated series, including The American Monument, America by Car, The Little Screens and others, arranged to draw connections between form and composition rather than subject. In an afterword, renowned actor Frances McDormand describes the bond between the two artists. Coen and Friedlander “hold mysteries that feel a bit connected,” she writes. “They both capture and fill frames with sometimes simple and other times chaotically elaborate images that cause us all to wonder.”

Aleix Plademunt: Matter (Spector Books)

Matter is a constant. It was there from the beginning and it will remain long into the future. The word matter is derived from mater, the Latin word for mother: matter refers to the substance from which all things are made. In English, the word can also indicate urgency or importance—something to be concerned about. Since 2013, Aleix Plademunt has been working on Matter, his most extensive photographic project. It tackles the age-old question of existence. It delves into our origins. Matter itself is inert, motionless, unable to reproduce. But it leads to life. The Big Bang’s radical expansion created everything. During its life cycle an organism undergoes many changes—it grows, learns, evolves, and dies—but matter always remains.

CJ Chandler: The Twist of a Knee (Skinnerboox)

Both brutal and tender, the twist of a knee was made over four years in and around Makhanda in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. Chandler’s photographs act as fractured markers of his presence as well as his interaction with and investigation of everyday life.

This work avoids spatial and temporal markers, leading the viewer on a journey of chance and critical engagement through the complexities of home, violence and ritual.

Cristian Ordóñez: On Trial (ACB Press)

Although only residing in the USA for a short period, Toronto-based Chilean Photographer Cristian Ordóñez has spent a large-period of the previous decade revisiting the lower states creating works that explore the notion of memory, personal relationship, and encounters with the territory.

On Trial observes and plays witness to these encounters, a body of work that presents the social, economic, and geographic survey of the landscape traveled by Ordóñez. A survey, engaging with all things natural and foreign on even ground, seeking to question not only the observer but the role of the object within the frame.

Forthcoming previous published works, Notes 01, 02, and 03, the new chapter continues to visualise his approach and interest in the photographic process as a medium to explore the territory, own cultural diversity.

On Trial contains a selection of 20 photographs edited by Rohan Hutchinson, and accompanied with text by Ordóñez. Designed to co-exist with previous and forthcoming published works, the body and cover of the publication exist in the same form, contextualising the in-transit approach of the photographic content, along with the journey of its publishing.

Thomas Albdorf: Body Double (Same Paper)

The series Body Double is a portrait of Los Angeles - not the actual city in California, but the abstract place which is embedded in the general consciousness through the representation in popular culture, primarily in movies. Body Double is a hike through the streets of the metropolis, partly based on appropriated images - from Google Street View, films, or vintage imagery - partly actually photographed on location in Los Angeles. Almost nothing here is what it appears to be at first glance - the sculptures photographed in the streets as well as in hotel rooms were never in the indicated places, the images are partly automatically deconstructed or created by software; the majority of the works were created in several steps that took place outside and inside the studio.

Every picture questions and discusses its conditions of production, the authenticity of what is shown, and the unconscious expectations and experiences that one brings to the table when looking at an image.

“Body Double is a book long portrait of Los Angeles made with appropriated images, constructed images, sculpted images and manifested experiences in conversation with elements, fragments of possible memories coexisting with real deconstructions, and real uncertainties glueing it all together. It takes the viewer on a dazed walk through a city’s self and its double, all filtered by the multitude of versions we might experience of it, or we definitely did experience of it, if only through a possible, unrealistic memory.”

Robin Hinsch: Wahala (GOST Books)

The images in Wahala depict both the places in the world where raw materials are extracted from the earth for profit, and the people who make their homes there. Photographer Robin Hinsch travelled to where the human impact on the planet was particularly visible to confront the viewer with the blunt ecological and human repercussions of the global reliance on fossil fuels.

The photographs in the book were made in the oil fields of the Niger Delta, Nigeria; the coal belt of Jharkhand, India; and the open cast mines of Brandenburg and North Rhine- Westphalia in Germany and Silesia in Poland. They shift between details and overviews, landscapes and portraits, the familiar and the foreign, disorientating the viewer as to what and where they are looking at. The images are cinematic—dark and brooding skies, dramatic landscapes lit by gas flares, collapsing ruins of buildings. Deviating from straight documentary, the book constructs new narratives of associative imagery to tell the story of exploitation—both by international companies and by those living in the areas impacted by their presence, in turn, hacking into the system.

The Yoruba word ‘wahala’ means ‘problem’ or ‘stress’ and is a widely understood pidgin term in Nigeria. It rarely stands alone, but when it does it implies there is a problem that leaves one shaken or speechless. Hinsch’s focus on where man’s ecological effect on the world is most glaring aims to have this impact—showing both the subject’s complexity and that the problem is our problem.

Richard Higginbottom: Singularities

An ongoing photographic study of human gesture and movement within the space of the city. Initially made as wider, more expansive observations of groups of people as they navigate the city, these photographs accent the nuances of body language and expressive movements that exist within urban space every day.

Staged recreations, with the initial research images as a point of departure, offer a new and slowed down perspective on the everyday gestures often unseen with the hurried shift of movement through space and time.

Wysocka/Pogo: Dead Pages No.3 Bravo (Outer Space Press)

Dead Pages is a magazine, which exceeds the usual format of the other books in our catalog — both in physical size and in the fact that it will be continuously printed as an unlimited edition– as well as by not having any binding. Instead, each edition of dead pages is composed of loose 64 x 44 cm prints that are folded in half and contained in a screen printed, PVC sleeve. It is our attempt to look at and reexamine the hidden messages that exist in our library. Each issue is our (re-)interpretation of one of the books we found and collected.

John Alinder: Portraits 1910-32 (Dewi Lewis Publishing)

John Alinder, son of a farmer, was born in 1878 in the village of Sävasta, Altuna parish, in Uppland, a province in eastern central Sweden. Alinder remained in the village all his life. He chose not to take over his parents’ farm and instead became a self-taught photographer and jack of all trades. He was a music lover, holder of the Swedish agency for the British record label and gramophone brand His Master’s Voice. For a time he ran a country shop from his home, and he even operated an illicit bar for a while. From the 1910s to the 1930s he portrayed the local people, the landscape around them and their way of life. He often photographed them in their homes and gardens, using the technology of the time, glass plates. These he developed in a small darkroom he had built and then made the prints in the sunlight

The Alinder collection was “discovered” in the 1980s when a curator found over 8,000 glass plates stacked away in a library basement. Children placed on chairs, people perched in trees, labourers, confirmation candidates and old ladies; often depicted against a background of foliage and sprawling greenery penetrated by sunlight. Alinder’s portraiture allows for the magic of chance, both liberating and defining the subjects. Often they are looking straight into the camera. As if they can see us. As if their gaze can travel the hundred years or so that lie between their time and ours. As if they were saying, “You are alive now, but we were once alive.”

This book shows Alinder’s portraits for the first time. Published in collaboration with Upplandsmuseet and Landskrona Foto, it coincides with the launch of the first major exhibition of his work. He is a unique portrait photographer whose work can match other acknowledged photographers from the same period, such as Gertrude Käsebier, Mike Disfarmer or August Sander, and whilst he worked within the confines of his own small village, it is clear that such an original and skilled photographer deserves to be showcased to a broader, world-wide audience.

Masahisa Fukase 1961-1991 Retrospective (Akaaka-sha)

The magic of Masahisa Fukase’s lifework in a single book.

This pocket-sized photobook, published to accompy a large-scale retrospective at the Tokyo Photographic Museum, offers a comprehensive look at the entire oevre of master photographer Masahisa Fukase. Revered for his relentless experimentation, his unique perspective and his focus on his own private life as the subject of his photography, Fukase’s work has left a lasting impact on the Japanese photography world.

Featuring eight series, including his masterpiece “Karasu (Raven)” “Bukubuku” “Family” “Homo Ludence” “Sasuke” “Walking Eye” “Private Scenes” and, most notably, the first photobook appearance of the series “Yoko” since its original publication in 1978, this book traces Fukase’s work between the 1960s and early 1990s to provide a new audience with access into Masahisa Fukase’s unique visual world.

Jem Southam: The Harbour (RRB Photobooks)

Shot along Bristol's harbourside between 1978 and 1983, The Harbour chronicles a period of significant change for the city which reflects the wider experience of loss and regeneration in Britain at the time. After centuries during which the harbour was a central hub of the commerce of the city and great generator of its wealth, through fair and foul means, they had largely fallen silent.

The end of that working life in the late sixties to the mid-seventies, left the sculptural presence of The Floating Harbour, surrounded by the disused and decaying dockland fabric: The cranes, the bridges, the pump-houses, the warehouses and in particular the giant bonded warehouses, the offices, the railways, the terraces of houses, the ship-building yards with their dry docks, the sand yards.

In The Harbour Southam documents the disused and neglected infrastructure, a brief period of calm after those centuries of activity, before the redevelopment really got going. It is an archival record of the architectural landscape rather than meditation on loss. The industrial life of the docks, and all the human stories it impacted, preserved in record but not mourned.

Giulia Parlato: Diachronicles (Witty Books)

Diachronicles is an examination of the historical space, regarded as a fictional container where an apparent collection of evidence opens up to the fantastic. In this space, the attempt to reconstruct the past falls into phantasmal gaps, where things are generated, used, buried, unearthed, transported, and relocated.
This nomadic and fragmentary nature of what has been left behind, reveals how the movement, transfiguration, and misinterpretation of objects shape historiography and ultimately, the real.

In the impossible search of academic legitimation, the viewer is invited into a world where the factual and the fake overlap. The work is about the absence of memory and addresses the leading role archaeology, photography and the museum space play in a historical narrative. In doing so, the human body is used to suggest scale and as a means to display objects.

Furthermore, Diachronicles digs into a parallel history, filled with disappearances, figures to decode, nonexistent artefacts and forgeries hidden in museums basements.

Chris Mann: Valley of the Moon (Guest Editions)

Jordan’s Wadi Rum desert, translated literally as 'Valley of the Moon' in English, is renowned for its red sands, Mars-like topography, and nomadic Bedouin tribes. The series traces the viewer's imagination through a stark depiction of this dream-like world and its ephemera; offering a subjective window into a reality unbound by time or place. 

A landscape both unchanged for thousands of years, yet seemingly transient, Valley of the Moon presents a visual dialogue with the desert and its transcendental oscillations between man and nature, light and dark, reality and imagination.

Alex Nazari: LADA (TUMO)

Here, in Alex Nazari’s gripping photographs, is the LADA, in all its vivid beauty, resilience and palatial influence. A Russian made, Soviet-era vehicle that arrived to Armenia in the 1970s.

This book is a hybrid documentation of life in Armenia and conversation that ties in a vehicle that has been a predominant part of society from Soviet times to today. LADA marks the end of a four year long project for Nazari. The images are a collection of 40 of his photographs taken on medium format film that he hand printed in the darkroom and later individually digitized.

Tomasz Tomaszewski: The World is Where You Stop (Blow Up Press)

Go on a journey around the world in search of human nature. The World Is Where You Stop is a critical look at our reality, where good and evil, euphoria and suffering, wealth and poverty, virtue and licentiousness, coexist side by side. For over 40 years of his career, Tomasz Tomaszewski, one of Poland’s most outstanding photographers, has recorded situations that are difficult to pass by indifferently.

Rä di Martino: Carmelo Bene. Là dove muore, canta (Humboldt Books)

Carmelo Bene. Là dove muore, canta is the work of the artist Rä di Martino and she comes to terms with the memory of Carmelo Bene (1937–2002), through his archive materials.

A documentary heritage made up of videos, audios, photographs, manuscripts and some six thousand volumes from his own personal library, from which di Martino sets out to develop a cycle bringing Bene’s figure and work back to life. Rä di Martino enters the phantasmagorical library of the actor and playwright, books with which he had an osmotic relationship, as an obsessive reader, annotating their pages. With a series of frontal photographic images, the artist focuses on the most studied pages, full of his scribbles and Post-its. She also goes through the actor’s diaries where he penned a work on Dracula that remained unfinished, and which the artist decided to photograph in its entirety. The volume also features an introductory text by Brizia Minerva and a critical contribution by Chiara Valerio.

Yana Wernicke: Companions (Loose Joints Publishing)

Wernicke documents with subtle grace the close bonds between two young women and the farm animals that they rescue, love, play with and care for, in a series mixing German romanticism and modern ethics.

John Berger’s landmark Why Look at Animals? describes the ‘species loneliness’ of modern man: how the ancient relationships between humans and nature have broken down, reducing the existence of animals to marginalised objects, as commodities, and as Other. Concerned with modern humanity’s yearning for a deeper connection to ecology, Wernicke’s series is a touching portrait of two young women who have established profound relationships with animals. Rosina and Julie each independently save animals from certain death and create bonds of love and trust with animals typically considered solely for their economic value.

In German, Companions, or Weggefährten, is a hybrid word that translates literally as ‘those who walk the path together’. Through tenderness, touch and intuition, Wernicke’s camera follows that path – of joy, emotions, tenderness and play between humans and animals – striving to close the gulf between our emotional consciousness and those of the other animals we live alongside.

Nan Goldin: This Will Not End Well (Steidl/Moderna Museet)

This Will Not End Well is the first book to present a comprehensive overview of Nan Goldin’s work as a filmmaker. Accompaning the retrospective show and tour of the same name, organized by Moderna Museet, Stockholm, the book draws from the nearly dozen slideshows and films Goldin has made from thousands of photographs, film sequences, audio tapes and music tracks. The stories told range from the trauma of her family history to the portrayal of her bohemian friends, to a journey into the darkness of addiction.

By focusing exclusively on slideshows and video installations, This Will Not End Well aims to fully embrace Goldin’s vision of how her work should be experienced. The book retains the presentation of the slide shows by showing all images in the same format on a black background and sequenced as they are in the sources. The 20 texts, of which the major part are newly commissioned by Goldin, complement and deepen the intention of her work.

Tobias Kruse: Deponie (Spector Books)

For his work Deponie, Tobias Kruse went to East Germany to find the vestiges and scars of a period that still casts its shadow over the present: the years following reunification. It was a time that presented a wealth of opportunities but one that, for many people, also spelled disappointment, anger, and bitterness. Thirty years after the fall of the wall, the photographer, who was born in Mecklenburg, drove 8,000 kilometres through eastern Germany. He travelled through empty regions and villages and attended crowded football stadiums and night-time demonstrations. He took pictures of scenes that could be historical or contemporary phenomena and visited places that have become part of the collective memory. His black-and-white photographs convey a sense of gloomy, oppressive unease. They are ciphers of mourning and icons of a painful historical process.

Two Hot Horses chronicles Moyra Davey’s observations on photography and her method and practice leading up to the exhibition Moyra Davey Peter Hujar at Galerie Buchholz, Berlin, in 2020. The text appears alongside photographs by Davey, selections from the Peter Hujar Archive, and images by Sarah Anne Johnson, Allen Frame, Zoe Leonard, and Gary Schneider.

Gilles Raynaldy: Welcome my friend (Le Point du Jour/Spector Books)

Gilles Raynaldy’s second photobook, Welcome my Friend, retraces an experience he had in the territory of the “Jungle of Calais” over the nine months preceding the evacuation of the refugees in October 2016. About eighty analogue photographs (both colour and black and white), along with excerpts from his journal, constitute a sedimentary memory. The book unfolds like a movie, following the rhythm of his wandering and the passage of the seasons: little by little, the photographs become impregnated with a place that we discover through the actions, gestures, and looks of the people who lived there and with the environment that is revealed around them. The writer Marielle Macé sheds light on the photographer’s approach, his non-intrusive presence, his attention to spaces, encounters, ways of inhabiting, gestures of hospitality. The anthropologist Michel Agier recalls the urban forms and social uses that were invented in the Jungle, whose lessons remain relevant today. Gilles Raynaldy’s photographic work focuses on social topics, gestures, architecture, and urbanistic planning, with an empirical and empathic method. His first book, Jean-Jaurès (Purpose éditions, 2015), dedicated to a school in the suburbs of Paris, was nominated for several international awards.
